Hiiumaa

After a couple of days of downtime around Haapsalu after the Midsummer Night, we took a car trip to Hiiumaa Island, the smaller of Estonia's two island-counties.

Two cars worth of us (Luke, Caleb, and I, along with Jane and a few of her friends) took the 1.5 hour ferry ride to Hiiumaa and saw some of the sights that the Island has. First up was Ristimägi (Cross Hill.) This spot marks the spot where, in 1781, Swedes who were being resettled off of Hiiumaa began their arduous journey. Everyone who visits leaves a cross of some sort-- be it two twigs tied together, stones in the shape of a cross, or a more conventional lumber cross.

It was a pretty moving experience, although we didn't stay very long.

My favorite historical site was Kõpu lighthouse, erected 1490AD. It is the world's third oldest operating lighthouse, and was originally lit with huge pyres, which made it even more visible as the immense amount of wood needed to sustain the fires resulted in deforestation on the hill on which it is located. The climb up the winding staircase was worth the view from the top.

That night, we stayed with Jane's grandmother, who works at a B&B type place where you can spend the night in one of a dozen or so big barrels. Comfort took a backseat to sheer novelty, but a good time was had by all playing drinking games and going to the sauna.

Jane's grandmother brings us some smoked fish with green bones. No, I hadn't been drinking too much, the bones really were green. Caleb looks apprehensive.

Here's where things got a bit fuzzy.

The next day, we did a bit more sightseeing, went to the beach, and came home. You can see the entire album (and all albums yet to come) on my Picasa page.
